Armor Health Adds Distinguished Psychiatrist to Correctional Healthcare Company’s Acclaimed Team of Behavioral Health Clinicians

Armor Health, a leading provider of correctional healthcare services providing quality care to state and local correctional facilities nationwide, has named Dr. Gregory Saathoff its new Chief Psychiatrist in Virginia.

Dr. Saathoff is one of the region’s most well-known and respected psychiatrists for his role in educating generations of psychiatric clinicians and as a forensic expert for state and federal agencies.

“We are proud to have Dr. Saathoff as part of the Armor Health team. He is a leader at the forefront of evidence-based psychiatric treatment of our patient population” says Armor Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jimmy Fernandez. “His passion for his profession is evident in his long-standing commitment to educating future psychiatrists.”

Dr. Saathoff is a professor of Emergency Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. His role in academia over the last three decades coincides with his commitment to providing care for correctional patients. He has made it a priority to bring almost 2,000 medical students, residents, and fellows into Virginia correctional facilities to further advance their education and growth as clinicians. Dr. Saathoff consults for the Virginia Department of Corrections and was recently appointed to a standing committee of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Saathoff has served as a forensic psychiatrist and/or consultant for numerous agencies including the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, U. S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Air Force, U. S. Army, National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and has testified before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee and U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

Dr. Saathoff takes a special interest in veterans in the correctional system. He served nearly a decade as a psychiatrist for the U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps, which included a tour of duty during Desert Storm.

Regarding his new position with Armor Health, Dr. Saathoff says “Virginia’s continued leadership in corrections is reflected in again having the lowest recidivism rate in the country. I am privileged to continue serving Virginia in this new role as Armor’s Chief Psychiatrist for the facilities that it manages in Virginia.”
